Broker figures reach point of crises with increasing volume

After an upturn in the economy, the lack of brokers is approaching a turning point, say analysts. According to Robert Sinclair, President and CEO of the Mortgage Intermediaries Society, things are going to get cramped and there will soon be too few brokers to cope with rising numbers. Sinclair spoke last weekend at a panels meeting at Mortgage Strategy's yearly Leaders Forum and estimates that there are currently 12,000 brokers, of whom another 4,000 write occasional mortgage loans.

In 2007, it is believed that there were 30,000 brokers. said Sinclair: "I put that on my executive and asked if this is something that AMI should be doing more on," and they were very clear about what AMI was focusing on and that it was not my role to develop a hiring policy for the sector.

"The irony is that in the foreseeable future we may not need so many brokers; we just need tech to help brokers do their job faster and more effectively instead of doing five, six or seven cases a months they can do 20 or 25.

AnMI: Number of mortgage brokers cut in half since 2008

Mortgage brokers and advisors have more than halved since the beginning of the 2008 fiscal turmoil, as Robert Sinclair reveals. Mortgage Intermediaries Association CEO said the number of individuals providing mortgage advisory services fell from more than 40,000 when the real estate boomed to less than 20,000 in 2013.

It added that the establishment of a registry for mortgage advisors and brokers was a key element in the preparations for the MMR, but the FSA's plan to establish a registry was stopped due to IT issues affecting its move to DCA early this year. Sinclair said he remains "frustrated" that brokers or consultants could leave a business before they "show up" in another business without having to inform the FCA, he added:
